New Delhi, Aug 18 (ANI): The Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the motion to impeach Justice Soumitra Sen of the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Sen is the first judge in the country to be impeached. The impeachment motion against Justice Sen, who has been found guilty of corruption, was passed with over 2/3rd majority required for such motion.
According to reports, 172 MPs voted for Justice Sen's impeachment, while 16 MPs voted against it.
Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Sitaram Yechury moved motions against Justice Sen in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
The first of the two grounds of misconduct against 53-year old Justice Sen being cited in the motion is misappropriation of large sums of money, which he received in his capacity as receiver appointed by the High Court.
The second ground of misconduct is that he misrepresented facts with regard to the misappropriation of money before the High Court.
The resolution for impeaching Justice Sen was signed and moved in 2009 by 58 members of the Rajya Sabha after which Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari constituted a three-member inquiry committee to probe the charges. (ANI)
