Iyomi's header levels Churchill, Dempo on I-league chart

Riding on Mboyo Iyomi’s late goal spirited Churchill Brothers moved up to second spot in the ONGC I-League after beating 10-men East Bengal by a solitary goal in XVI round match played at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Sunday.

The all-important goal came in the 76th minute, gasping East Bengal’s fight against relegation. With this win, Churchill now levelled Dempo with 32 points but the latter still tops the chart on a better goal difference.

On the other hand, East Bengal remained in the lurch of relegation as they are at eighth place with 15 points, ahead of Viva Kerala (12) and Salgaocar (10). Two teams will be relegated.

With two more rounds to go, the title race with Churchill moving in to seriously challenge with the defending champion’s getting back their reign on top of the standings.

East Bengal hopes suffered a major blow in the very first half when midfielder Jayanta Sen was red-carded by officiating referee A. Arjunan for a wobbly tackle on Naoba Singh in the 28th minute.

East Bengal goalkeeper Subrata Paul was adjudged the Man of the Match showed the amount of sustained pressure withstood by home team’s defence during the match.

East Bengal’s received the jolt 14 minutes before the final whistle when Mboyo headed Naoba’s centre into the goal. East Bengal found a great opportunity to equalise three minutes later, but Chandan’s back-volley didn’t find the target.
