Chelsea star Mikel pleads for kidnapped father's release in Nigeria

London , Tue, 16 Aug 2011 ANI

London, Aug.16 (ANI): Nigerian and Chelsea footballer John Obi Mikel has appealed to kidnappers to release his father, who has failed to return home after work on Friday.

Obi senior runs a transport company in the city of Jos, in Plateau state, is said to have not answered any phone calls and his mobile is uncontactable. No ransom demand has yet been made, the Daily Mail reports.

Chelsea manager Andr? Villas-Boas informed Mikel of the kidnapping on Saturday night, but he decided to play in the 0-0 draw at the Britannia Stadium yesterday, where he came close to scoring with a long-range volley that goalkeeper Asmir Begovic tipped over the crossbar.

In an interview with Sky Sports News, he said: "We haven't heard anything, no phone calls, nothing. Whoever has got my dad or knows where my dad is please contact me and hopefully he will be released."

"Please let him go my dad is an old man and he hasn't done any harm to anyone as far as I know and I don't know why he has been taken. This happens a lot, not in the northern part of Nigeria but in the eastern part. It's a very safe place where we live in Jos," he added.

Mikel, who lives in England with his brother, said he would like to return to Nigeria but had been advised to stay in the United Kingdom. (ANI)
