UP floods leave people stranded

Lucknow, Sun, 14 Aug 2011 ANI

Lucknow, Aug 14(ANI): Heavy and incessant rains have caused floods in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, crippling normal life and leaving villagers stranded without food and fodder.

The floods affected at least 30,000 people in Barabanki, Gonda, Sitapur, Lakhimpur Kheri, Balrampur and Siddharth Nagar districts.

Over 2,000 hectares of agricultural land has been flooded and paddy and cane crops were destroyed.

Vishnu Pratap Singh, head of a village, said that apart from the heavy rains, breach in the embankments along the Ghagra River led to floods, which is in spate after heavy rainfall in Nepal.

"Water is being released from Nepal continuously from 5-6 years, so the situation of flood worsens. People face lot of problems and the government provides us with least help," said Singh.

Singh added that the state government did not pay any heed to their requirements and failed to provide the villagers with even minimal amount of food.

"We haven't received any help till now; in fact we are not getting any help from last 4-5 years. We don't even receive a minimal amount of food grain from the government's side," added Singh.

The monsoon this year has caused heavy floods in several parts of northern India like Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and central Madhya Pradesh, claiming several lives and damaging property. (ANI)
