Mumbai, Aug 7(ANI): The sinking of the Panama-flagged cargo vessel M.V. Rak off the coast of Mumbai has led to oil spill.
The ship sank on Thursday with 60,000 metric tonnes of coal, 290 tonnes of fuel oil and 50 tonnes of diesel on board.
"We are monitoring the area. We have observed that the oil is moving towards the coast, but it (oil) is very small in quantum," Sontake, an official from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, said on Sunday.
"We have collected samples from various locations and we have alerted the concerned authorities to look into this matter," he added.
Samudra Pahari, a Coast Guard ship which was sent on patrol, is currently using oil-spill dispersant to control the situation.
The Coast Guard has also launched Operation 'Paryavaran Suraksha' to avert any kind of ecological disaster.
The authorities have directed fishermen to stay off the coast and refrain from fishing, until the problem is solved. (ANI)
