Kathua (J-K), Aug 7 (ANI): Family members of Indians imprisoned in Pakistan jails on Sunday appealed to the central government to secure their speedy release.

They have been running from pillar to post and only assurance has come to their fate. In fact they have written to the Indian government and human rights commissions of both countries but in vain.

"We expect from our government that they will help us. They should try to secure the release of my husband. We have put up applications everywhere. First we sent it to the human rights commission in Pakistan and then in our India. We went to South Block (administrative area) in New Delhi and handed over the application (to an officer). He assured us that my man would come back," said Bishno Devi, wife of Om Prakash Chandra held in Pakistan jail.

"(Om) Prakash Chandra is in (Pakistan) jail for the last 14 years, another person Ram Raj is in behind the bars for the last eight years. In the past, letters written by Prakash Chandra and Ram Raj came. Prakash Chandra wrote 'my sentence has been over. I don't know why they have not released me'. Ram Raj also wrote the same: 'my sentence has been completed but they have kept me locked for no reason'," said Shiv Ram, village headman.

"Few days back Pakistan Foreign Minister held talks with our Indian counterpart. It raised our expectations when they discussed this issue. They talked about release of Indians (prisoners) imprisoned in Pakistan jail and Pakistani (prisoners) imprisoned in Indian jails and some of them have been sent behind bars for no reason. Due to this, the expectation of both the families have been raised," added Ram.

According to media reports, India has released about 500 Pakistani prisoners, detained during the year 2008 to 2011, while Pakistan also reciprocated by with releasing Indian fishermen and civil prisoners in recent past. (ANI)
