May 31: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is definitely dead if not due to plane crash than of old age some where in oblivion but the mystery still remains contentious. Latest salvo is an application seeking documents relating to destruction of a governmental file, thirty years ago, regarding the mystery and vehement opposition by Prime Minister Office.

In response to a notice issued by Central Information Commission (CIC) on a plea of a Delhi based organization – Mission Netaji – PMO has expressed serious opposition. Under RTI Act, Delhi based organization is seeking details concerning the destruction of a file by the government, which contained reports of investigation into the circumstances leading to Netaji’s death, thirty years ago in 1972.

Netaji’s death remained mystery since his plane crashed, in which he was expectedly travelling to Japan, while fleeing from India after British troops geared up to arrest him, Netaji was the founder of Indian National Army and was in favour armed struggle for the freedom India.

After Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) of PMO denied papers pertaining to destruction of the file titled ‘investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Sri Subhas Chandra Bose’, Mission Netaji's official Anuj Dhar moved the CIC in November last year. In its response CPIO had revealed that the file was destroyed in 1972 during the routine process of review and weeding of old records.

The explanation seem to be fishy while keeping in consideration the numerous committees and commissions to look and investigate into the mysterious disappearance of India’s one of the tallest freedom fighters.

While calling for PMO’s comments, the CIC has fixed August 10 this year for hearing.

On May 17, PMO's Director and CPIO Kamal Dayani termed the application as "not maintainable and has called for its dismissal and has suggested that an appeal, with its Appellate Authority, should first have been made. However, reacting to his statement, Mission Netaji has contended that the response lacked information on particulars of Appellate Authority, to whom an appeal could have been made.

CIC is yet to come out with a statement regarding PMO’s opposition and the decision is only possible after the hearing on August 10, 2007.
