Bangalore, Aug 3 (ANI): Lok Sabha MP Sadananda Gowda was on Wednesday elected as the new chief minister of Karnataka.he Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs voted by secret ballot and Gowda, considered to be close to former chief minister B.S Yeddyurappa, won by seven votes.
Gowda got 62 votes in his favour, while Jagadish Shettar, belonging to the rival Ananth Kumar camp, bagged 55 votes, Times Now channel reports.
A total of 118 MLAs out of 121 voted today.
Fifty-eight year-old Gowda is an MP from Udupi Chikmagalur. He has been BJP state president and a non-controversial one - a considerable feat in a unit that has several power centres.
Gowda has also been an MLA and deputy leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly.
He had his earlier education at Keyyur of Puttur Taluk and also in Sullia. He graduated in science from St. Philomena College, Puttur and went on to attain his degree in law at Udupi Vaikunta Baliga College of law.
During this period, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Students Union of the Law College. Moreover, he was very active as the District General Secretary of ABVP.
In 1976, he started practicing law at both Sullia and Puttur. All through these years he involved himself in public as well as social activities and resigned from a government post to pursue the same.
He was the State President of the BJP in Karnataka and was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and 2009.
Yeddyurappa resigned from his post on Sunday after being indicted in Lokayukta Justice (retired) N. Santosh Hedge's report on illegal mining. (ANI)
