London, July 31 (ANI): The world's most revered restaurant El Bulli, which pioneered molecular gastronomy, has shut down forever.
But head chef Ferran Adria has insisted that "the spirit of El Bulli will live on".
"It's a day of celebration. An important day marking the start of a new phase. At midnight tonight we will see the birth of new dawn; that of elBulli foundation," the Telegraph quoted Adria as saying.
Thousands of chefs have been trained in the Barcelona restaurant with many of them now running their own acclaimed restaurants, including six of those recognised as the top ten best in the world.
"Being here on this final day, this historic day, is very emotional," Rene Redzepi, the head chef at Noma restaurant that surpassed El Bulli as the world's best in 2010, said.
"This is the place where my eyes were opened to a new world.
"What Ferran has created here is not found anywhere else. It's a very special place. He taught people to think about food emotionally and created new techniques that have transformed the art of cooking.
"The place is inspiring, as anyone that was lucky enough to work here knows. I'm talking about the spirit that exists here - an atmosphere of creativity, of freedom of expression, of breaking boundaries ad taking risks.
"But nothing can stay the same forever and for Ferran it's time to move on," he added.
The staff of the restaurant were indeed in a celebratory mood, having served the final meal to paying customers the day before - a 49-course tasting menu.
At the door of the restaurant was spotted a giant confectionary French bulldog - the breed that El Bulli was named after - made from marzipan and meringue and decorated with colourful garlands of sugared flowers.
According to an annual estimation of Restaurant Magazine, El Bulli won the best restaurant title five times between 2002 and 2009. (ANI)
