Journalist attempts self-immolation in Agartala

Agartala, July 22 (ANI): A journalist of a local daily, recently attempted self-immolation in protest against police action against him.

 

Mohammad Kazi Plaban, reporters of 'Nagar Darpan' was demonstrating with his colleagues against the police, in front of Tripura Police Headquarter in Agartala.

 

He alleged that a police official took his salary from him when he was returning from his office on July 10. Next day, he had gone to meet the Director General of Police to complain about the police official who took his money, but could not meet him.

 

In protest, Plaban doused himself with petrol and set himself alight in front of the police headquarter.

 

"I went there for the first time but they did not let me get in, after that I came back and poured petrol on my body to protest against the injustice that had been meted out on me. This is what I wanted to do and it was nothing else," said Plaban.

 

While interacting with mediapersons in the hospital, Samir Ranjan Barman, former Chief Minister of Tripura demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, who he said , had no respect for the people of the state.

 

"Chief Minister (Manik Sarkar) should resign and the government should go, there is no other alternative way.No question of any democratic situation in this state. They are undemocratic government. They have no respect for the people, they have no respect for the journalists and they have no respect for the opposition parties," said Barman.

 

Ratan Chakraborty, spokesperson of Congress party criticised the State government for what he called the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. He wanted compensation to be paid to Plaban and strict action to be taken against those involved .(ANI)
