PM to present awards to best performing states in agriculture field

New Delhi, July 14 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, will deliver the 83rd Foundation Day Lecture of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) here on Saturday, and present awards to chief ministers of winner states selected for the best performance in agriculture.

 

"Best Performing States in the Food-grain Production (2010-11) will be awarded by the Prime Minister for achieving highest total production and production in individual crops during the period. Instituted by the Ministry of Agriculture, the award will be given to ten States," a Ministry of Agriculture release said.

 

"Sharad Pawar, Minister of Agriculture and Food Processing Industries will present Indian Council of Agricultural Research Awards in different categories as part of ICAR's 83rd Foundation Day function. Pawar will also e-launch new initiatives of ICAR," the release adds.

 

ICAR has a long tradition to recognize excellence by giving awards to exceptional contributions made in agricultural research, education and extension. The various award categories include researchers, progressive farmers, farm journalists, teachers, authors etc.

 

The Agriculture Ministry release further said: "This year, there will be 85 awardees under 17 different categories. These comprise 13 institutions, 59 scientists, 10 farmers and 3 Journalists. Out of 59 scientists and 10 farmers, there are 9 women scientists and one woman farmer."

 

"The first ever Plant Genome Saviour Community Awards (2009-10) will also be given on the occasion. Instituted by the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority, it is the first attempt to appreciate the outstanding contribution of individual farmers and farming communities in conserving agro-biodiversity," the release adds.
