Washington, July 12 (ANI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has 'lost legitimacy', amid diplomatic tension between the two countries.
A mob attack on the US embassy in Damascus pushed Clinton to say that Bashar was "not indispensable," the BBC reports.
In Washington, Clinton demanded that the Syrians "meet their international responsibilities immediately to protect all diplomats and the property of all countries."
"President Assad is not indispensable and we have absolutely nothing invested in him remaining in power," she said.
"Our goal is to see that the will of the Syrian people for a democratic transformation occurs," she added.
Tensions between the two countries have escalated since last week when Robert Ford, the first US ambassador to Syria in six years, traveled to Hama, an anti-regime hot spot, and met with residents.
Syrian authorities said the visit was unauthorized and was proof the US was seeking to "incite" rebellion. (ANI)
