Patna/New Delhi, July 10 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday flagged off a high-level delegation to New Delhi to meet the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, to demand granting special status to the state.
Around 10,000 people signed the memorandum, which would be submitted to Dr. Singh.
Bihar Janata Dal-United (JD-U) chief Narayan Singh is leading the delegation, which left today from Patna by road. The delegation would reach New Delhi on July 13.
Meanwhile, Delhi unit general secretary and spokesperson Prabhat Ranjan said party leader Balbir Singh would welcome the delegation at the Badarpur border in New Delhi on their arrival.
He said the delegation would assemble at the Jantar Mantar, where Janata Dal (United) supremo Sharad Yadav would address them.
"It is high time that Bihar should be given a special status as it is the right of the state, which has participated actively in India's freedom struggle," said Prabhat Ranjan.
"After the division of Bihar on November 15, 2000, all the mineral resources have gone to Jharkhand's kitty and the state is left with nothing. So it needs all the attention of the Centre," he added.
Prabhat Ranjan further said Bihar fulfills all the conditions required for the allotment of special status under the Gadgil formula.
"Bihar is presently on the path of development under the chief ministership of Nitish Kumar. A special status to Bihar would not only foster the growth of the state, but also assist in the development of the country," he added.
The Gadgil formula was formulated with the formulation of the fourth five-year plan for the distribution of plan transfers amongst the states. It was named after the then deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Dr. D R Gadgil. (ANI)
