Moradabad , Thu, 07 Jul 2011 ANI

Moradabad, July 7 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Police detained Moradabad MP Mohammad Azharuddin here on Thursday in a bid to prevent him from visiting a local strife-affected village.

Azharuddin was detained while he was on his way to the Asatalpur village near Moradabad, where locals had waged protest against the atrocities committed by the police officials.

The locals held a highly charged agitation at Asatalpur on Wednesday , after certain police officials allegedly attacked a few men and molested women from the village, a day earlier.

In order to prevent any untoward incident from occurring, the authorities had imposed several restrictions in the village.

Enraged by the detention of the lawmaker, Congress activists and supporters of Azharuddin shouted slogans against the state government and appealed for his immediate release.

"I have been detained by the police. I will leave soon. Then we will see what happens, god willing. I can go to either of the places. We will se about that," said Azharuddin.

Former Indian cricket skipper, Azharuddin, who is an elected lawmaker from the Moradabad constituency, was detained under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code, which prohibits the assembly of five or more people and is currently under force in Asatalpur. (ANI)
