Kolkata, July 7 (ANI): Four red Australian kangaroos brought from Czech Republic under an exchange programme have become the centre of attraction at the Alipore Zoological Gardens in Kolkata.
These rare kangaroos, two male and two female, were brought from Czech Republic on June 2.
Raju Das, Director of the Alipore Zoological Gardens, was of the view that these red Australian kangaroos have become an asset to the zoo.
"On June 02, 2011, we got four red kangaroos from Czech Republic. Out of them, two are males and the other two are females. They had been quarantined for 30 days and now they have been released after the quarantine officer has provided us a certificate that they are fit for the public," he told mediapersons here.
Das further said that the kangaroos are doing fine and gradually becoming accustomed to the Indian environment.
Meanwhile, Soumyadeep Pal, a visitor, opined that he felt good to see the red kangaroos as he had never seen them before.
"The initiative which has been taken is good one, as there are many ways of entertainment in the present days and Alipore Zoo would have been on the verge of being sidelined. And if such rare animals are brought here, then I believe, these would attract the public and increase the number of visitors to the zoo," said Pal.
A native of Australia, red kangaroo is the largest mammal from Down Under.
Apart from kangaroos, four zebras from Israel have also become a part of the Alipore Zoo under the exchange programme. (ANI)
