Mumbai incident: No place for filthy politics in democracy

New Delhi, Tue, 05 Feb 2008 Vikash Ranjan

Who has armoured any political party to infringe the law and beating the innocent people brutally on a large scale, only because they belong to different states. The politics doing on regional basis by playing Maratha card, indeed a dirty one-demand criticism from all corners of the country.

The ‘Maharashtra Navnirman Sena’ founded by Raj Thackeray, who still better known as nephew of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, is not more than an insignificant regional party.

Even a fool person can understand by this rash act what political advantage Raj Thackeray wants to achieve particularly in light of the assembly election, which is due to come in next year. If not more at least MNS chief could found a media coverage on front page.

The violence against north Indians commenced while Samajwadi party-led UNPA was holding large desh bachao rally at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Nearly 500 supporters of MNS overpowered the road and started thrashing north Indians even in front of the police.

This is regrettable for the police standing motionless and not taking action at the right time. After all police should not forget their duty, which is to protect the life of innocent people and arrest of the assailants and moreover not to differentiate people on the silly basis of religion or the region.

For the past couple of days, Raj Thackeray has been coming down heavily on migrants from UP and Bihar and not sparing even the Chhath pooja celebrated by them. Thackeray had said that the traditional ‘Chhath Pooja,’ which is popular in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is not more than a ‘drama’. Who is he to raise a finger on the traditional faith of the people? Who is he to hurt the cultural and religious sentiments of the people?

Religious faith is always a matter of belief for the believers, is sacrosanct and others should not question it. Even in this materialistic age one of the greatest solace has been religion and faith.

He must need to read the constitution, which bestows every citizen to follow his or her religions and practice customs.

Raj Thackeray perhaps wanted to show that he is more extremist than the Shiv Sena after broking off ties with it. He actually wanted to get dual advantage first to gain political advantage by playing Maratha card as elections are just round the corner and secondly, to ending the monopoly of the Shiv Sena.

Not only lambasting the north Indians, the MNS President said at a political function that though Bachchan had become superstar in Mumbai, his heart was more inclined towards Uttar Pradesh.

Every citizen has a fundamental right to praise any part of the country. After all Uttar Pradesh have been his ancestral place and his birthplace too. So, the love towards his birthplace is a natural phenomenon. And, besides it is none of others’ business to interfere in one’s religion, customs, or his or her love to any part of the country.

One good thing happened that all either major or minor political parties have condemned Raj Thackeray for his regional based politics. Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav rightly pointed out that instead of Raj’s advice that non-Maharashtrians should shout the slogan “Jai Maharashtra,” people should say “Jai Bharat.”

Raj Thackeray must understand before Marathi, Bihari or Punjabi etc, we all are Indians first.

Region based politics only divide the country and its people, which is not a good sign for the peace and security of the country.

Nobody is above the Constitution. Article 19 of the constitution confers every citizen the right to move freely throughout the territory of India and to reside and settle in any part of the territory of India of their choice.

The Election Commission should take serious note of such incident and set guidelines to ban perpetually, if any political party would dare to spark anti-national or anti-regional feelings.
