Manmohan Singh to visit Bangladesh in September

New Delhi , Mon, 04 Jul 2011 ANI

New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, will undertake a two-day visit of Bangladesh in the first week of September this year.

A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs said: "At the invitation of Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Her Excellency Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, would be paying an official visit to Bangladesh from 6th to 7th September, 2011."

The announcement of Dr. Singh's visit comes two days after the Prime Minister was controversially reported, as saying: "We must reckon that at least 25 percent of the population of Bangladesh swear by the Jamaat-ul-Islami and they are very anti-Indian, and they are in the clutches, many times, of the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence agency of Pakistan)."

Dr. Singh's publicized remarks on Bangladesh not only embarrassed India and the Prime Minister personally, but created a storm in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Government is reported to have summoned India's High Commissioner Ranjeet Mitter for an explanation, but this was termed as speculative by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The timing of the statement could not have come at a worse time, with Foreign Minister S M Krishna expected to visit Dhaka from July 6 to 8.

In a statement, the official spokesperson had said: "Our attention has been drawn to some off the record remarks attributed to the Prime Minister during his interaction with Editors in New Delhi. It is clarified in this regard that these attributed remarks were by no means intended to be judgemental. The Prime Minister and his government and the people of India have the greatest affection for the people of Bangladesh and hold our relations with Bangladesh to be of the highest importance."

He added: "India recognises the stability of the democratically elected Government and is committed to the non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states. In recent years, ties between India and Bangladesh have seen exceptional heights with close cooperation in a wide range of areas. The focus on both sides has been development cooperation, poverty alleviation, capacity building and education. It is in this context that the External Affairs Minister of India is undertaking an official visit to Bangladesh. We are fully committed to our bilateral relationship with the people and the Government of Bangladesh." (ANI)
