Bangalore, June 26(ANI): Musician and ankrang exponent H.S. Anasuya Kulkarni has displayed her collection of over 300 musical instruments from various periods in Bangalore.
Kulkarni also introduced anghklung (a musical instrument and called angkrang in India) made out of two bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame.
While talking to mediapersons, Kulkarni said that music has no language barrier and has no nationality and that's how she has collected more than 300 musical instruments from different countries of the world like Indonesia, China, Australia, Afghanistan, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Kabul and Bhutan.
"In Kabul, I learnt Hindustani music and when I went to my Ustad's house for a concert, where I sang a Darbari Kannda (a Hindustani raga in the Kanada family). While I was returning, my father-in-law presented me a 'Swarmandal' (an Indian harp). That was my first collection. I never knew that I would be going to collect so many instruments," Kulkarni said.
The surmandal or swarmandal which is an Indian harp presented by her father-in-Law is commonly used as an accompanying instrument for vocal Hindustani classical music.
"On our way to India, we visited many countries. So, whenever I came across any instrument (musical), I used to buy them and my friends too have presented some of them. So, in this way I have collected them (music instruments)," she added.
Her first public performance was at Durlabha Vadya Vinod International Music Festival in Bhopal in 1982. (ANI)
