London, June 24 (ANI): Revolutionizing the way we do laundry, a Brit student has invented a washing machine that is installed on a cycle and can be powered by pedaling.
21-year-old Richard Hewitt, who recently completed a degree in product design at Sheffield Hallam University, has come up with the 'Spincycle' a device that washes and dries clothes by using pedal power.
The Spincycle washes clothes through an attachment, which is put on the back of a bicycle and filled with water and detergent. It washes and dries clothes separately when pedaled for ten minutes each.According to Hewitt, the invention was still under development and that he had considered several other ways of making it work efficiently.
"As well as saving a lot of time, energy and water, people might also be able to make a little bit of money this way. I looked at making it into a trailer for a bicycle but it made more sense to make it a complete unit," the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.
"By removing the aesthetic aspects the design could easily be simplified and made cheaper," he added.
Hewitt revealed that he hit upon the idea after visiting a children's orphanage in Burundi, Africa, where he washed loads of clothes with his own hands.
"One of the tasks I did at the orphanage was to wash around 30 loads of childrens' clothes by hand. It was extremely time consuming and I thought that ' there must be an easier way than this,'" he explained. (ANI)
