200-yr-old cookery book's slimming recipes include beef tea, tongue pie
London, June 23 (ANI): A 200-year-old cookery book that has recently been discovered in a charity shop includes recipes for tongue and udder pie, herb porridge and beef tea.
'Domestic Management; The Healthful Cookery book' was written in 1810 by authoress Arabella Plumptre, a doctor's daughter who promised readers she would 'temper instead of pamper the appetite.'
It offers healthy 'slimming' meals and 'avoids some of the most injurious refinements of modern cookery'.
In a 355-page book, she details a string of revolting recipes, including calve's feet jelly, green pudding, fried tripe and roasted eel with lemon juice, reports the Daily Mail.
Readers with constipation are advised to drink old sour milk known as 'Boniclapper' to 'powerfully open the breast and passages' whilst a beggar's pudding is made of old scraps of bread soaked in hot water.
Those tempted to serve wine with the meal are warned: "Wines should never be given to invalids without the expressed permission of their medical attendant - as they are dangerous medicines and do more harm than good."
The book also gives tips on how to be the perfect housewife by boiling a horse head, making your own furniture polish, removing warts using silk thread and how to cure frozen limbs. (ANI)
