Hazare sends clear warning to Govt., threatens to go on a fast

New Delhi , Tue, 21 Jun 2011 ANI

New Delhi, June 21 (ANI): After the government and the civil society representatives failed to arrive at a common draft on the Lokpal Bill in their final meeting, Gandhian Anna Hazare stating that the government is not serious on the issue, on Tuesday threatened to go on a fast.

"There is no way left for me, but to go on a fast. The government does not want to bring a strong Lokpal Bill," said Hazare, sending a clear warning to the government that talks have failed.

The final meeting between the government and civil society representatives on the Lokpal Bill ended here on Tuesday evening with divergent views remaining on six issues including bringing the post of Prime Minister under the purview of Lokpal.

The key issues on which differences remained even after the ninth and last meeting included bringing the Prime Minister, higher judiciary and acts of MPs inside Parliament within the purview of the Lokpal, the mode of selection and removal of its members.

"They gave their draft, we gave our draft and there was a short discussion...on important issues there was no agreement. These are six issues and one or two more issues. We agreed to disagree," Union Human Resource and Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters after the meeting.

"There are two to three days. If they wish to give comments on our drafts, they can do so...we hope the differences are resolved. Both the drafts will be circulated among political parties in a meeting next month before being taken up by the Cabinet," he added.

Team Anna, expressed disappointment after the meeting, and said the government wants to make Lokpal only a symbolic body.

RTI crusader Arvind Kejriwal, a key figure in Anna Hazare's campaign against corruption, criticizing the government said the earlier draft had at least proposed to bring the Prime Minister in the purview of Lokpal, but the present one does not have this provision.

"I must say I am deeply disappointed by the model of Lokpal that the government has proposed," added Lokpal Bill joint drafting committee member Prashant Bhushan.

With no consensus being reached between government and civil society representatives during their sixth joint drafting committee meeting on the Lokpal Bill, Hazare earlier on June 16 threatened to resort to another agitation if a strong anti-corruption bill was not passed.

"If a weak bill is formed, then it will be of no benefit for the society and the country, so what is the use of sanctioning such a draft? It seems that the agitation of Jantar Mantar that was ended needs to be revived again. The government is backing out from all the issues," said Hazare.

"They lack the feeling of eradicating corruption from the country; they are not willing to make India a corruption-free country. Poor people are finding it difficult to stay with corruption and the government is not bothered about it," he added. (ANI)
