New Delhi, June 18(ANI): The first ever meeting of the working group of the recently created Commonwealth Network of National Election Management Bodies (CNNEMB) has concluded in New Delhi with a call to Commonwealth countries to bring voter education to the centre of election management.
The two-day meeting, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Dr. S.Y. Quraishi, was attended by delegates from South Africa, Kenya and Commonwealth Secretariat.
In his concluding address at the meeting, Quraishi underlined the significant results recently attained in India through the programme of voter education.
The working group has recommended that the Election Management Bodies (EMBs) should have legal obligation for voter education, voter education to be one of the major functions of EMBs, separate budget with adequate allocation for voter education in the budgets of the EMBs, involvement of civil societies/ NGOs and other public interests group in voters education.
The election officials from South Africa evinced keen interest in the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) and were presented details of the working of Indian EVMs. (ANI)
