Musharraf's party facing legal objections over proposed name, election symbol

Islamabad , Thu, 16 Jun 2011 ANI

Islamabad, June 16(ANI): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has enlisted 14 new political parties, but did not take up the registration application of former President Pervez Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), applied by his party members last year.

Musharraf's political party, which he launched last year in a bid to make his comeback to Pakistan politics, is reportedly facing legal objections over its proposed name and electoral symbol.

The first objection has been raised by a person who claims that his party with the same name was registered with the ECP in 2006.

The second objection is from the Pakistan Freedom Party, which claims that the symbol of "eagle", sought by the APML, has already been allotted to it.

The APML registration application, pending for more than a year, was not on the agenda of the new commission's first meeting because of two objections, sources told the Dawn.

Documents submitted by 14 parties were found to be in conformity with the provisions of the Political Parties Order, 2002, and were ordered to be retained on record in accordance with the law. (ANI)
