'I would have resigned had I been in Weiner's position': Obama

Washington, June 14 (ANI): US President Barack Obama has said that he would haveresigned if he was in the position of New York Democratic party Congressman Anthony Weiner, who has admitted sending lewd photographs of himself to women online.

After being asked to quit by his congressional colleagues, Weiner took a leave of absence, but has refused to step down.

Obama insisted that Weiner, who is married, had "embarrassed himself".

"I can tell you that if it was me, I would resign," the BBC quoted Obama, as saying.

"When you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions, you can't serve as effectively as you need to, at the time when people are worrying about jobs, and their mortgages, and paying the bills - then you should probably step back," he added.

Nevertheless, he said that it would be up to Weiner and his constituents whether he remains in office.

The incident came to light at the end of May after the lewd photos were accidentally released on his Twitter account, which he claimed was hacked.

However, last week, he admitted that the photo was of his own body and he had intended to send it privately to a university student in Washington. (ANI)
