Mayawati recommends CBI probe under a well-coordinated plan

New Delhi, Thu, 31 Jan 2008 Vikash Ranjan

Chief Minister Mayawati with the aim of strengthening Muslim vote banks has recommended a CBI probe on Wednesday into the yearlong communal CD released by the BJP involving some senior leaders of the party on the eve of Uttar Pradesh election last year.

In a query of the new move taken by her, the Chief Minister told reporters the sensitivity of the matter and the possibility of many senior BJP leaders had influenced her government to take decision in the matter, which could spark communal hatred in the state.

She said the move was also taken to discard the charges of political vendetta made against her government.

With the sole purpose of polarising Hindu Voters the alleged anti-Muslim CD contained references to the Babri Masjid demolition, Godhra massacre with offensive visuals and references to Muslims.

During campaigning for the 2007 Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha election, the Saffron Party reportedly distributed the communal CD to the BJP’s constituents in Lucknow.

Congress and the Samajwadi Party complained to the Election Commission of India that the CD released by the BJP contained many objectionable and offensive matters, which could hurt the sentiments of a particular community and the releasing of CD was against the Model Code of Conduct released by the Election Commission for the election purposes.

The move came in the later hours of the day after the state police prepared a charge sheet against several BJP leaders comprising some prominent one like the national party president Rajnath Singh and Lalji Tandon for releasing the controversial CD last year in April.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh, Anuj Kumar Bishnoi was ordered to lodge a FIR against the accused persons of the Bhartiya Janata Party by the Chief Election Commissioner, N Goalaswami.

Accordingly on April 6 last year, Anuj Kumar had lodged FIR at the Hazratganj police station in Lucknow, which named eight party functionaries other than the BJP president Rajnath Singh, the then Leader of Opposition in the UP assembly and Lalji Tandon.

The BJP leaders annoyed at the leak of the chargesheet to the media said that it was a well-coordinated move by the state government to humiliate their leaders, which were busy in the preparation for the upcoming 2009 general election.

“She is indulging in politics of hate. She thinks all Opposition leaders are epitomes of evil. If a chargesheet is filed against Rajnath Singh, we will hit the streets and fight this politics of vendetta,” whispered Om Prakash Singh, the leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

The case against the BJP leaders was under investigation, said Brijlal, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order).

Working under a well-calculated plan, Mayawati has just picked the communal issue, a day after the three-day National Council meeting of the Bhartiya Janata Party concluded on Tuesday at New Delhi, where the party’s prime ministerial candidate and the Leader of Opposition, L k Advani announced to make the terrorism a big issue in the state with plans to hold rallies at sites of terror carnages in the Uttar Pradesh.
