K.V. Thomas to review PDS in Kerala

New Delhi, June 3 (ANI): Union Minister of State (Independent charge) for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Prof. K V Thomas will hold a meeting to review the public distribution scheme (PDS) and non-PDS activities in Kerala tomorrow.

 

The meeting will be attended by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, State Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob and Agriculture Minister K P Mohanan.

 

Senior officials from the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, from the State Government, Food Corporation of India (FCI), and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) will also be present on the occasion.

 

The focus of the meeting will revolve around the procurement of rice under PDS and the proposal from the Government of Kerala for distribution of non-PDS items such as pulses, chillies and spices on monthly basis through fair price shops to ration-card holders irrespective of Above Poverty Line (APL) and Below Poverty Line (BPL) categorization.

 

It is proposed that the State Government that 75 per cent of the total expenditure will be met by the State Government and balance 25 per cent would be the Government of India's share.

 

The Government of India's share would be Rs 88.46 crore and the State's share will be Rs 265.39 crore.

 

The review meeting will also further discuss on BPL and Antyodaya Anna Yojna (AAY) allocations. According to the Union Government, the allocations of foodgrains for BPL and AAY families are made at the rate of 35 kg per family per month in all States/Union Territories.

 

Some of the other topics to be discussed during the review meeting include Construction of proposed CFS at Kannur, Construction of Storage Capacity at Kunnamthanam and Construction of Storage Capacity in the State of Kerala under PEG-2008 Scheme. (ANI)
