May 29: In the 56th Miss Universe contest, the 20 year old Miss Japan Riyo Mori was crowned the title for the second time for her country. Last year’s winner Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico crowned her the $250,000 dollar diamond and pearl crown. She was overwhelmed and trembling with joy after her name was announced as the winner.
Miss Brazil Guimaraes was announced the first runner-up and Miss Venezuela Ly Jonaitis as the second runner-up. Miss USA Rachel Smith who was counted as the top most contestants only managed to grab the fourth runner up as she fell to the floor during the evening gown competition. Miss Korea Honey Lee was awarded as being the third runner-up. Miss India, Puja Gupta, though selected in the top 10, couldn’t manage to be among the top five.
Miss Riyo is the second winner of the beauty pageant title for Japan after Akiko Kojima, who owned it in 1959. Being a Japanese Dance instructor and her mother running a dance school, she wants to establish an international dance school very soon.
In this most popular event of the world, hosted by Mexico in the National Auditorium of Mexico city, contestants of 77 countries participated in different categories. Mexico was hosting the event for the fourth time and also was the winner of 1991 contest. The top 15 contestants competed in swimsuit competition and later the selected top 10 contested in evening gown. After the selection of top 5, the five had to face the final round with onstage interviews to judge their personality and public speaking ability.
Organized in partnership with NBC Universal and Donald J Trump it is committed to work on various social, economic, health and issues related to women.
The winner now has to travel all across the world for various charity purposes and especially to create awareness for HIV/AIDS. Miss Universe also has to involve with various charity organizations including the Latino Commission on AIDS, Global Health Council, God’s Love We Deliver, Gay Men’s Health Crisis and some others. In association with these organizations, Miss Universe will try to create awareness to bring changes in all concerned fields.
First Runner Up: Miss Brazil, Natalia Guimaraes
Second Runner Up: Miss Venezuela, Ly Jonaitis
Other Top Five: Miss Korea, Honey Lee; and Miss USA, Rachel Smith.
Other Top Ten: Miss India, Puja Gupta; Miss Angola, Micaela Reis; Miss Tanzania, Flaviana Matata; Miss Nicaragua, Xiomara Blandino; and Miss Mexico, Rosa Maria Ojeda Cuen.
Miss Photogenic Award: Miss Philippines, Anna Theresa Licaros. This is the 6th time that Philippnies own the award.
Miss congeniality: Miss China, Ningning Zhang.
