West takes lead despite Kaif's marathon effort

Rajkot, Tue, 29 Jan 2008 NI Wire

Central Zone skipper Mohd. Kaif’s fighting marathon knock of 160 went in vain as his team bundled out at 384 falling 27 runs short to West Zones’ total of 411 with the latter taking away the all important first inning lead in Duleep Trophy four-day match played at the Madhavrao Scindia stadium here on Monday.

Kaif’s classy yet defiant knock of 160 (316 balls, 19 x 4), could not be able to aid his team to sail past West Zone first innings total, as the match is heading for a draw with just a day left in the Duleep Trophy tie.

West worked up 99 for no loss in their second essay at the close of third day’s play. West started its second inning on a positive note as both the openers Sahil Kukreja (40) and Ajinkya Rahane (53) added 99 runs for an unbeaten first wicket alliance. West Zone took its overall lead to 125 and is all set to secure three points for first inning lead.

Resuming from the overnight 237 for 5, skipper Kaif put up all his effort to come close to West despite losing his overnight partner Mahesh Rawat at the score of 268. The duo of Kaif and Rawat added 84 runs for the crucial seventh wicket stand.

Kaif, 96 overnight started the day’s proceedings after he viciously stepped out for a straight drive four on Jobanputra’s delivery to complete his century. He hit 13 fours in his century knock that came off in 190 balls while Rawat spent 192 minutes in the middle and faced 152 balls with eight fours for his courageous 48.

Kaif also got useful support from SS Sanyal (31). Kaif hung around for a long period while facing valiantly to rival bowlers and was ninth man to be dismissed. Trivedi got rid of Kaif after a 461-minute marathon

Jobanputra got the breakthrough for West as he made Rawat (48) play a hurried shot and Yusuf Pathan grabbed a clean catch. Sanjib Sanyal misjudged Dhruv’s flight and in return got swiftly stumped by Parthiv.

Murali Kartik (19) fell to Dhruv who claimed four wickets for 84 runs. Munaf returned to pick his third and removed tailender Sumeet Tyagi (12) to finish off Central’s innings at 384.
