Gurgaon Kidney Racket kingpin still untraced

New Delhi, Mon, 28 Jan 2008 NI Wire

The alleged kingpin Dr Amit Kumar of the global kidney racket surfaced in Gurgaon on January 24 is suspected to have eloped in Nepal through illegal means.

This crime has refused to die down in people’s mind in which some hundreds of poor labourers were duped and made to loose their one kidney in lure of job and money.

Dr Amit Kumar was not alone but was heading a good number of other doctors and middleman who help the kingpin running the racket smoothly.

Gurgaon Police Chief Mohinder Lal told media persons, “We suspect around 400 or 500 kidney transplants were done by these doctors, over the last nine years.”

The police arrested Dr Upendra Kumar and three middlemen and his driver Harpal. After the interrogation police came to know about the possibilities of leaving India with the help of fake passports. Though Haryana Police have initiated the process to get red corner notice against Amit Kumar. Reportedly India has no extradition treaty with Nepal and hence bringing the culprit from Nepal would be a problem.

Investigators said that the mastermind of the kidney racket Amit Kumar had earlier been arrested twice by Mumbai Police, once by Delhi and Guntur (Andhra Pradesh).

The culprits took advantage of labourers’ poverty and promised them job after these innocent people come in their net, they used to sedate them and forcefully take out the kidney. Even if some people came knowingly they were not given the promised amount.

The clients were usually from US, England, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Greece who used to pay Rs 15 Lakh to 25 Lakh for a kidney.

The doctors who executed such planned crime are shame on the Hippocrates Oath which doctors take for the ethical practice of the profession and their success for running the racket after being held four times by the police raise a much bigger question on the possible nexus other than doctors.
