Fishery Survey of India to tag tunas reaching Andhra Pradesh coast

Vishakhapatnam, May 23(ANI): The Fishery Survey of India (FSI) will commence a programme to tag varieties of tuna fish that reach off the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

Tagging of the highly migratory tuna would begin in July so that trawlers can keep track of the population and distribution of the fish, which is one of the most consumed in the world.

S.A. Naik, a senior scientist at the FSI, said tagging the fish would boost tuna export from India.

"The motive behind the tuna fisheries forecasting system is to give a thrust to the export potential of the tuna resources. It has got a lot of demand in Japan, eastern countries and European countries as well," Naik said.

The programme would study factors including availability of the tuna, their travelling route, and the atmosphere in which they survive, among others. (ANI)
