Pakistan daily stresses need for addressing Balochistan's alienation

Islamabad , Mon, 23 May 2011 ANI

Islamabad, May 23(ANI): An editorial in a Pakistan newspaper has stressed the need to address Balochistan's growing sense of alienation.

Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Muhammad Aslam Raisani has objected to China's takeover of the Gwadar Port, as he was not consulted.

Pakistan Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar has said China has agreed to operate the Gwador Port on the expiry of Port of Singaporean Authority's (PSA) contract. It is still uncertain that China would take over the port since the agreement is valid until 2047. Taking into account the performance of the SPA, China's takeover is likely.

The Daily Times editorial says the federal government should help Balochistan develop the capacity of the project, as it could not afford to rely on foreign government support indefinitely.

The editorial says Balochistan should be brought into the mainstream by creating more employment opportunities and development projects for the province. (ANI)
