Kajang, May 22(ANI): Survivors in Malaysia have recounted the horrific moments of a landslide that struck an orphanage in Hulu Langat outside Kuala Lumpur, killing 13 people.

The orphanage warden Hambali Ismail said the incident occurred after the students had lunch and were cleaning the dining hall.

"I was at the hostel then and heard a loud noise and saw many students buried alive," the Star quoted him, as saying.

He said several minor landslides occurred about 50 metres away from the orphanage building.

"I shouted to others to run and in a split second the earth came tumbling down, burying many of my friends. All of us were under a canopy to prepare for an event, and I saw the earth moved and then collapsed," a survivor, Mohd Iman Abdullah said.

Another student, Jihad Jalal, 14, said the situation had become panicky and people were yelling for help. He said a villager rescued him.

Faizal Isni claimed to have heard noises like snapping of the tree branches before the landslide occurred.

"At that time we were finishing the stage to welcome the arrival of Finas (National Film Development Board) officials, scheduled at 5pm," he said.

A local resident, who was among the earliest to arrive at the scene, said the landslide had occurred within ten minutes of his arrival at the spot but everything fell silent about half an hour later. (ANI)
