Ohio, May 19(ANI): A new study has claimed that Arab television networks could not be blamed for stoking anti -American resentment.
Research based on surveys of nearly 20,000 residents of six Arab countries suggests that while watching networks like Al Jazeera fuels anti-American feelings in some viewers, while in other cases it actually reduces such sentiment in others.
The impact of Arab television broadcasts depended on how the viewer defined his identity, whether he considered himself a Muslim nationalist or an Arab nationalist or was devoted to his own country.
The study found that the more Arab nationalists watched Al Jazeera, the more likely they were hostile to the United States and the converse was true of people who were devoted to their country.
Arab residents who held a Muslim nationalist political identity tended to have the most unfavorable views of the United States, and viewing of Arab TV networks did not effect any changes
In this study, 28 percent of the respondents had a primary political identity tied to their country while about nine percent had an Arab nationalist identity. From a policy perspective, that means about a third of Arab residents would respond to more pro-American messages. The key is communicating messages that resonate with their political identities, Eric Nisbet, the lead author of the study and assistant professor at Ohio University said.
The study comprised surveys of 19,036 residents across six Arab countries: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates.(ANI)
