Varanasi, May 18 (ANI): Congress leaders Digvijay Singh and Salman Khurshid have accused the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh of neglecting development directed to help the poor and lower caste people.
Addressing a Congress conclave here today, they alleged that Chief Minister Mayawati was encouraging corruption through land allotments.
Digvijay Singh said Uttar Pradesh has been on a decline for several years .The people of the state have suffered under Governments led by Mulayam Singh Yadav, Bharatiya Janata Party and Mayawati.
He said the law and order situation in the state had deteriorated and there has been an increase in crimes. Factories have had to shut down due to lack of electricity.
The conclave discussed the recent agitation in Bhatta Parsaul village in Greater Noida, which resulted in the death of two officials of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and two villagers, besides leaving scores of others injured.
Digvijay Singh said: "The land that has been allotted so far has been given to big industrialists. The poor and the lower castes, and the farmers in Noida have not got any support from the government."
The farmers have been agitating since January demanding higher compensation for their land acquired by the state government.
Their demand is that only half their lands should be acquired, while the rest should be handed over to the farmers after development.
They also want 25 percent reservation for farmers in all schemes of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway.
The farmers have also been demanding that the authorities should give 120 square metre plots to landless farmers and a compensation of Rs. 5,00,000 for each acre of acquired land.
Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi was also present in the meeting.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi will address the valedictory function on Thursday.
The two-day conclave beginning today is being held to prepare the party cadres for the state elections scheduled for next year. (ANI)
