Reforms made to 'restore public trust in climate sciences': IPCC chief Pachauri

New Delhi , Tue, 17 May 2011 ANI

New Delhi, May 17 (ANI): Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) chairman Rajendra Pachauri has said substantial reforms were made during last week's meeting in Abu Dhabi that can 'strengthen the IPCC and help restore public trust in the climate sciences.'

IPPC, which was created as a United Nations body in 1988 to analyse the latest knowledge about Earth's changing climate, has worked with thousands of scientists over the years and shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

However, it suffered a severe blow after it failed to respond effectively to mistakes, including an error about the rate of Himalayan glacier melting.

It was however, decided in last week's meeting that an executive committee will be created to oversee the body's daily operations and to act on issues that cannot wait for full plenary meetings, the Nature News reports.

The committee comprising 13 members would be led by the chairman, and includes the vice-chairs and co-chairs of its working groups and technical support units.

The meeting also adopted a detailed protocol for addressing errors in existing and future IPCC reports, along with guidelines to ensure that descriptions of scientific uncertainties remain consistent across reports.

"This is a heartening and encouraging outcome of the review we started one year ago. It will strengthen the IPCC and help restore public trust in the climate sciences," Pachauri said.

Pachauri was earlier asked to resign over fears that his increasingly troubled tenure was hampering efforts to halt global warming, but he managed to retain his post. (ANI)
