Supporters cheer Trinamool Congress' expected poll sweep in West Bengal

Kolkata , Fri, 13 May 2011 ANI

Kolkata, May 13 (ANI): With the Trinamool Congress (TMC) party heading towards a historic poll sweep in West Bengal, hundreds of party supporters celebrated the perceived decline of the 34-year-old Left Front rule here on Friday.

Though the counting of votes is still underway, the trend for the 294-West Bengal assembly seats claimed the TMC has clinched 220 seats, way ahead of the 67 won by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM)-led Left Front government.

The Left Front's defeat in the polls would mark a new era of politics and governance in West Bengal, which is grappling under Maoist insurgency, stagnant administration, poverty, unemployment and land issues.

Ecstatic at the party's expected victory, a massive crowd of jubilant supporters gathered at the local TMC headquarters, waving flags and shouting slogans.

Party activists also extended their solidarity with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, who took on the Left Front on issues such as Maoist insurgency and poverty throughout the poll process.

"The 34 years misrule of the Left Front government will now be over and the state will move towards better governance. The people have given their full support to Mamata Banerjee and she is all set to assume power. There is no doubt in this," said Amit Ghosh, a TMC supporter.

According to reports, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was trailing behind Trinamool's Manish Gupta by 839 votes in the Jadavpur constituency, while CPI (M) star campaigner and state Housing Minister Goutam Deb was trailing behind Trinamool's Bratya Basu by 1443 votes in the Dum Dum constituency.

Industry Minister and CPI(M) Politburo member Nirupam Sen is also behind his Trinamool Congress rival Rabi Ranjan Chatterjee by 2,986 votes in Burdwan South.

IT Minister Debesh Das was trailing behind Swarnakamal Saha of TMC by 7,797 votes in Entally, while Sunderbans Development Minister Kanti Ganguly is trailing behind TC's Debasree Roy by 1,026 votes in Raidighi.

Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee, the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly is leading against Anupam Debsarkar of CPI(M) by 4,832 votes. (ANI)
