Kolkata, May 13 (ANI): As early trends indicated a clear win for Trinamool Congress (TMC)- Congress alliance in the West Bengal assembly polls, Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that this is a victory of 'Maa Mati Manush' (Mother, Soil, People)".

"We are humbled. We are thankful. This is a victory for 'Maa Mati Manush," Banerjee told reporters.

"Democracy has won. This will bring joy to Bengal. At this happy moment, let us remember the martyrs who have been part of this struggle for over three decades. We salute them," she added.

Banerjee also thanked Congress President Sonia Gandhi for her support.

Though the counting of votes is still underway, the trend for the 294-West Bengal assembly seats claimed the TMC has clinched 215 seats, way ahead of the 70 won by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM)-led Left Front government.

The Left Front's defeat in the polls would mark a new era of politics and governance in West Bengal, which is grappling under Maoist insurgency, stagnant administration, poverty, unemployment and land issues. (ANI)
