New Delhi, May 12 (ANI): With the controversy surrounding the land acquisition stir in Uttar Pradesh gaining momentum, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday said the government has plans to introduce bill on Land Acquisition in the next session of Parliament, as there appears to be consensus on the issue.
"We must have a new land acquisition law. Government has drafted a new act that has provisions for better compensation, rehabilitation and other measures. But it was not possible to build a consensus on the law. Consensus building took some time. Now we are at a point when there is a fair degree of certainty that there is a consensus on the law with some amendments," he told a press conference here.
Further condemning the police action on Congress activists in Lucknow, Chidambaram said: "It is natural for political parties to espouse the cause of farmers. They have the right to do so."
"I have not called for a formal report. I am keeping in touch with what is happening there," he added, when asked whether the government has asked for a report on the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier on Thursday, the Bhatta Parsaul village in the Greater NOIDA area of Uttar Pradesh witnessed high drama following the arrest of Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Gandhi, who spent almost 19 hours at Bhatta Parasul, was arrested under Sec 151 CrPC at around 11 p.m. on Wednesday and was taken to the Kasna police station.
He was released on bail by the Uttar Pradesh Police and brought to Delhi at 2:15 a.m.
He was arrested along with AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, UP Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, Congress MPs Raj Babbar and Parvez Hashmi, and other Congress leaders. (ANI)
