New Delhi, May 4 (ANI): A cross-section of Muslim intelligentsia in India has welcomed the elimination of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden through a covert operation mounted by the US Navy Seals last weekend.
The Hindu quotes Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung, as saying that there was no sympathy or support for Osama bin Laden in the Indian Muslim community, adding that the reaction to his death bordered on disinterest.
The former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer also opined that certain sections of al-Qaeda would be happy to have a new leadership.
According to Maulana Syed Athar Dehlavi, the chairman of Anjuman Minhaje Rasool, Osama defied and defiled Islam with his statements even before the horrific 9/11 attacks.
The paper was quoted Dehlavi as saying that the Anjuman Minhaje Rasool was one of the first organizations to issue a fatwa against bin Laden in 1998.
It quoted the Maulana, as saying that Muslims will always hold the United States for creating Osama in the first place.
Manzoor Alam of the Institute of Objective Studies was quoted as saying that Osama did not even have a degree in Islamic theology and was never treated as knowledgeable on the Koran and Sunna.
The Hindu article says that across the Muslim world, religious leaders held him in scorn.
Scholar Mushir-ul-Hasan said Osama had no relevance in today's world.
The Hindu quoted him, as saying: "In the light of the democracy movement in the Islamic world, it is very clear that the only option for Muslims lies in the democratic process and not in terrorism."
Tanweer Alam, a young writer, said he could not understand why a Muslim reaction is always sought whenever the subject of Pakistan or terrorism came up. (ANI)
