Ludhiana, May 3 (ANI): Members of Hindu-Sikh Jagriti Manch, a city-based NGO, staged a protest here on Tuesday asking the Central Government to take immediate action against the striking pilots of national carrier Air India.
"Hindu-Sikh Jagriti Manch has staged a effigy-burning protest against those government employees who go on strike for their personal gains. The recent example of this being the strike in New Delhi by (Air India) pilots who are getting a salary of almost 200,000 per month," said Parveen Dang, President, Hindu-Sikh Jagriti Manch.
"They have handicapped the system with their strike for a hike in salary and other demands. This would not be tolerated. We request the central government and the Supreme Court to put these pilots on strike behind bars," he added.
Chaos hit New Delhi and Mumbai airports on Tuesday, where passengers were seen waiting inside the premises, as the Air India pilots' strike entered its seventh day today.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court issued contempt notice to nine officers of the Indian Commercial Pilots' Association (ICPA).
The High Court has given two weeks time to the officers to respond to the contempt notice.
The High Court earlier in the day criticized the striking pilots of national carrier Air India for the loss they have caused to the nation.
On Monday, the Delhi High Court asked striking Air India pilots to take a decision on resuming their work, warning 'this strike will not see another day'.
The Delhi High Court had earlier directed pilots on strike to go back to work by 5 p.m. last Friday, but over 800 pilots defied court orders.
Over 800 pilots of the Indian Commercial Pilots' Association (ICPA), who belonged to the Indian Airlines and were employed by Air India after the merger of the two carriers in 2007, have been on an indefinite strike since April 27 demanding pay parity.
The ICPA claims that while Air India pilots enjoy a huge fixed salary component, the same is almost minuscule for former IA pilots in 2007. (ANI)
