Howell sights strong finish in Indian Masters

England Ryder Cup hero David Howell sets his sight for a strong finish in the upcoming EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters, which gets under way at the Delhi Golf Club from February 5 to 10, to put himself on course for regaining his world's top 50 places after having a reasonable 2007 season.

"I have always been in the top-50, but slipped out a bit as I didn't have a very good 2007 season. Right now it’s just about getting back into form," said Howell.

Howell played a key role in Europe's emphatic 2006 Ryder Cup victory over the USA at the K Club, and specially his final day singles victory -- 5&4 over Brett Wetterich was the biggest winning margin of the day.

Howell firmly believes that the standard of golf in Asia, particularly in India, has taken a big leap and it’s just a matter of time before a real champion emerges. This will be his maiden trip to India and he would surely love to mark his presence.

"I am looking forward to playing in India. It’s a country that I have heard so much about, but never been to. I think its great to be playing in a new place in the beginning of the," said the 32-year-old from Virginia Water in England.

"Asian players are doing very well now. Its the same as it happened with European Tour players competing in America many years ago," England's Ryder Cup hero said ahead of the inaugural EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters.

"Asian players have become quite competitive too. I believe that it just needs more strength and depth thats all," said Howell who will compete amongst stellar star-cast led by world number five Ernie Els in the $2 million European Tour event, being promoted and organised by 'golf in DUBAI.'

"I have played some of the top Indian players, like Jeev Mikha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa and Arjun Atwal and they all are very strong," said the former Dubai Desert Classic champion.

"I'm a better player than I thought I ever would be, however I am not satisfied with my current stature and believe that there is more to accomplish," said Howell, hinting his best is yet to come.

EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters has roped in a mega sponsorship including EMAAR-MGF as the Main Sponsor, and Omega and CNN as valued Co-Sponsors.

The event will infuse a new excitement into the country’s golf scene and amidst golf lovers when it arrives in the heart of India’s capital, February 4th -10th at Delhi Golf Club.

The ‘golf in DUBAI’, in cooperation with the three professional tours (European Tour, Asian Tour and Professional Golf Tour of India), will bring the best players in the game together to celebrate Indian golf for the inaugural EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters.

"With players like David Howell, Ernie Els, Jeev Milkha Singh, Mark O'Meara signing up for the inaugural event we can expect some quality from these players," said Mohamed Buamaim, vice-chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAI.
