CPI-M calls 10-hour Singur shutdown Saturday

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

Kolkata, Oct 3 (IANS) West Bengal's ruling Left Front major partner, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), has called a 10-hour shutdown in Singur Saturday to protest the 'conspiracy' hatched by the opposition that forced Tata Motors to shift its small car project from the area.

The call for the shutdown was given Friday by the Singur zonal committee of the CPI-M, hours after Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata announced that Tata Motors was pulling out the Nano project from Singur.

The shutdown would begin at 6 a.m. and continue till 4 p.m., the CPI-M said.

'We were planning a dawn-to-dusk shutdown. But we decided to restrict it to 10 hours in view of the impending Durga Puja festivities,' said a CPI-M activist.

The five-day Puja, the biggest festival in the state, begins Sunday.

A group of CPI-M supporters put up a road block for a brief while on the Durgapur Expressway - part of the National Highway (NH)-2 connecting Kolkata and Delhi - close to the Nano factory.

The CPI-M's youth wing Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has also decided to observe Saturday as 'condemnation day' across the state to protest the opposition's 'destructive' agitation.
