New Delhi, Apr 26 (ANI): Railways Police on Tuesday challenged the statement of volleyball player Arunima Sinha, who lost her leg after being thrown out from a running train near Bareilly earlier this month.
Arunima, who is currently undergoing treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Trauma Centre here, had earlier said that she was pushed out of a moving train by a group of men, who tried to grab her gold chain.
The railways, however, said the incident wasn't one of attempted robbery.
"Investigations point out that it was not a case of robbery nor was Arunima thrown out of the coach as alleged by her. Arunima's statement does not match the evidence gathered so far. In fact, the chain, which Arunima claimed was snatched, was found," ADG Railways AK Jain told reporters.
"Arunima was travelling without luggage, which shows that travel was not planned," he added.
Arunima's family, however, denied all this, saying that it was an attempt to cover up the Railway Police's incompetence in relation to the probe.
"The police had made some allegations before as well. They said she was travelling without a ticket and was sitting in front of the compartment gate. They are trying to cover up their incompetence," said Arunima's mother, Gyanbala Sinha.
Twenty-three-year-old Arunima lost her leg after she was pushed from the Padmavat Express in Bareilly on April 11 by three men, who were trying to rob her.
The incident took place between the Chenati and Bareilly railway stations when she was on her way to New Delhi to appear in a CISF recruitment examination.
The police had then lodged an FIR under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery). (ANI)
