Kabul, Apr 24 (ANI): A Talban suicide bomber who was shot dead before being able to blow himself up in Afghanistan's defence headquarters was allegedly a sleeper agent from Britain.
The Daily Mail quoted Afghan sources as saying that the militant's name and other personal information had been forwarded to London, suggesting that he had been living in Britain.
They also said that the militant managed to enter the office of Defence Minister, Abdul Rahim Wardak, but was shot dead by bodyguards before he could detonate his suicide vest.
Meanwhile, Afghan and NATO commanders have rejected claims that the bomber was a sleeper, though they acknowledged that he must have had inside help.
"It's a wake-up call for all of us. It's the recognition one more time that there's a continuous effort to penetrate, especially into the Afghan system," Lieutenant-General William Caldwell, who heads Nato's training mission in Afghanistan, said.
"They are now looking for other ways, with a small investment on their part, to try to gain a strategic impact. There could have been 30 engagements today in which 50 insurgents were but they won't make the headlines. But one insurgent wearing a suicide vest and getting inside a military installation will." He added.
Although the British foreign office was unable to confirm the newspaper's claim, it would be the first known case of a suicide bomber from the UK travelling to Afghanistan if it is proved that the attacker was a British national.
Militants wearing Afghan National Army or Afghan National Police uniforms have reportedly carried out 20 attacks over the past two years. (ANI)
