Transporters' strike in Karnataka may end today

Bangalore, Tue, 22 Jan 2008 NI Wire

After getting assurance by the transport department that they would issue fitness certificate to them on a massive scale, the transport strike is likely to be terminated Tuesday afternoon. The transport department officials have already started to issue fitness certificate to vehicle owners in several districts.

As per the media source, the ultimate decision to end the strike will be taken after knowing the reaction of the vehicle owners’ statewide and discussing with the government this afternoon.

The report says that the vehicle owners were ready to install speed governors if available at convenient price and demanding uniformity in installing speed governors; means the installation should be implemented on a pan-India basis and not on state-level.

After going on strike by the transporters on Monday in order to show protest against the state government’s decision of installation of speed governors compulsory, movement of both goods as well as people were severely hit in Karnataka.

G R Shanmugappa, president of the Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association while talking to reporters, said that vehicles would not come on road unless the government did not make clear of its decision.

He further clarified that they were acting as per the directive of the state high court, and further come out with his analysis that they are not against speed governors. But they want it to be implemented at an all India scale and not state-level.

On hearting a petition filed by the parents of a road accident victim, the court asked the government in July 2007 to check speeding by trucks and other commercial vehicles.

Shanmugappa commented that about 60,000 lorries without having speed governors belonging to other states pass through Karnataka daily. They will have no speed governors if the decision is restricted only to this state. This is an anomaly. The rules should be same for all. So we demand that the government do not disclose its decision till the Central government takes a call on the issue.

He asserted that the state government is working under the influence of speed governor manufacturers’ lobby. They charge Rs 16,000 for each instrument, whose actual cost is only Rs 2,000 in Delhi and Rs 6,000 in Kerala.

He claimed that the government was being influenced by a lobby of speed governor manufacturers who charged Rs.16,000 for each instrument although it cost only Rs.2,000 in Delhi and Rs.6,000 in Kerala.

To protest against the state government’s decision to make obligatory the installation of speed governors more than 3.65 lakh commercial vehicles had gone on the strike since Monday. Earlier, the owners had held two rounds of talks with the government.
