Kahalgaon protest ends as govt promises 24hr power supply

Patna, Mon, 21 Jan 2008 NI Wire

The three-day violence in the Kahalgaon town of the Bhagalpur district Bihar that left three people dead in police firing has been cut short as the state government promised a 24 hrs power supply to the town.

On Friday large scale violence erupted while people under the banner of Nagrik Sangharsh Samiti demanding uninterrupted power supply came to the road to protest. However, a complete mismanagement by the administration and police atrocities worsen the situation with police firing in which three locals were shot dead and many injured.

Despite having a NTPC power plant the township of Kahalgaon has been facing an unusual 20 hours power cut that angered the people and forced them to come to road.

The state government soon ordered for a judicial probe of the firing incident and announced compensation for the victims. Administration also took the help of mediators in their talk with the people’s forum who on Monday decided to call off their strike.

Bhagalpur Divisional Commissioner and Additional Director General of Police met the local leaders and also made a point to provide job assurance from the NTPC management to kin of those killed in the firing.

With this the threat of closing down of NTPC power plant in Kahalgaon has also subsidised.

The state government has also decided to withdraw cases against the protestors and a compensation of Rs 10,000 to those who are injured in the incident.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties who are demanding a CBI inquiry has observed Sunday as ‘black day’ and also called for a state-wide bandh on 25th of this month. The main opposition party RJD calls the judicial inquiry as ‘eyewash’ to avoid the main problem of the people and also demanded 10 lakhs compensation to families of those killed.
