Tamil Nadu Congress lawmakers unhappy with party leadership

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

Chennai, Oct 2 (IANS) A number of Congress legislators Thursday expressed their dismay at the party leadership for allegedly ignoring their calls for strengthening the organisation in Tamil Nadu.

Participating in a function here to remember Mahatma Gandhi, the speakers, however, did not directly refer to Congress president Sonia Gandhi's fiat to the state unit to desist from demanding a share in power in the state.

'The leadership of any political organisation that overlooks the just aspirations of its workers and ignores calls for strengthening its base will not only lose face, but also its entire structure,' said D. Yashodha, a senior Congress legislator.

'Those who control the party ought to realise that the organisation is not their family property but a responsibility imposed upon them by the nation. By continuing to ignore the needs of the rank and file, those who reside in ivory towers imagining their control will realise a landslide beneath their feet,' Yashodha added.

Polur Varadan, another lawmaker, echoed the sentiments and assailed those in the party who continued to feather personal nests instead of coming to the aid of the rank and file.

'Those from organisation who are drunk with the spoils of power at the centre and continue measures of self-aggrandisement ought to realise that leaving the humble workers in the lurch will result in unpredictable consequences,' Varadan said.

Congress legislature party leader D. Sudarsanam and state unit president M. Krishnasamy paid glowing tributes to the late elder statesman of the party K. Kamaraj and the late prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri during the occasion.

'These leaders contributed selflessly to the growth of the party, an aspect that is sadly absent in some of us today,' Krishnasamy said.
