Kolkata, Oct 2 (IANS) West Bengal Thursday joined the rest of the nation in paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the 139th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
The main function was held at Barrackpore Gandhighat in North 24 Parganas district where state governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, garlanded his grandfather's statue and listened to devotional songs.
An all faith prayer meeting was also held at the venue, along with the customary spinning of yarn on the charkha - spinning wheel.
The day was celebrated across the state, with information and broadcasting minister and state Congress president Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the central part of the city.
Other state congress party members including Manas Bhuniya and Pradip Bhattacharya were also present.
The scheduled tribes' body Tapashili Adivasi Parishad also organised a function at the same venue to celebrate the day.
At the state secretariat Writers Building, chief secretary Amit Kiran Deb garlanded Gandhi's portrait.
Special programmes were held across the state in educational institutions, clubs and various localities to mark the day.
