Imphal, Mar 12 (ANI): Manipur, which has over the years produced many crafts persons, has added another feather to its cap through W. Umakanta Singh, a famous wood carver and proud winner of the 2005 National Award for Master Crafts person and weaver.

Singh was born on March 1, 1984 to W. Ibotombi Singh and W. Mani Devi of Samurou Awang Leikai and has been practicing his craft since the age of 12.

He learnt the craft from his father and started working for him after he completed his class XII. He began his craft journey by exhibiting his creations at small exhibitions and events.

The national award got him recognition across the country but many have appreciated his work and talent even earlier.

"I don't know how to tell you, but I am extremely happy to receive this award and I think I have achieved what I wanted in my life," said Umakanta Singh

"In Manipur we don't have the latest machines that other people are using for the same work. So it takes more time to finish the work. We use only ordinary tools for carving. We also do the designing part with our hands. Due to this, we cannot compete with other states," he added.

"I am very happy for my son. He went to receive the award from our ex President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. He told us that Abdul Kalam took one of his favorite craft work "LAI statue of God," said Umakanta's father W.Ibotombi Singh.

Manipur has produced many talented people like Umakanta Singh whose success is based on their hard work and never- say-die spirit. Today they serve as role models and as a source of inspiration for the youth of the state. (ANI)
