CWG scam: CBI registers case against ex-Prasar Bharti CEO

New Delhi , Fri, 04 Mar 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Mar 4 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case against former Prasar Bharti Chief Executive Officer (CEO) BS Lalli on Friday in connection with allegations of corruption in awarding broadcasting rights for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

The CBI is also conducting raids at Lalli's residence and at his office in Mandi House.

The investigation agency is also conducting raids at the office of Zoom Communications and the residence of its owner Wasim Dehlvi in connection with the alleged broadcast scam related to the 2010-sporting extravaganza.

The CBI action comes after it sought sanction of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to prosecute Lalli.

The investigating agency had written to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry after getting clearance from the Prime Minister's Office seeking its permission to go ahead with criminal proceedings against him.

The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, had earlier referred the Shunglu Committee Report on Host Broadcasting issues relating to the Commonwealth Games to the CBI.

He has also asked the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to recommend an appropriate course of action within two weeks

Dr. Singh has also ordered review of the claims for payments of dues by the London-based SIS LIVE, the broadcaster for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, and to "ensure that there is no over-payment".

The Shunglu Committee had said that the two officials had favoured the SIS LIVE with an exorbitant contract and approved inflated bills, causing a loss of Rs.132 crore to the national exchequer.

"If 'over-payment' has been made, action should be taken to ensure the recovery of it," Dr. Singh said. (ANI)
